Valentine’s Day:

IMG_6247

I got to plan Serenity’s class Valentine’s Party again!  It was so much fun!  I went with a bake shop theme this year.  I built a big bake shop out of cardboard, and Serenity and I had fun all month making goodies out of foam and paper to fill it.  We also had chef’s hats from Oriental Trading to decorate (I made name stickers with my Silhouette!  I love actually getting to use it!)  I bought a big pack of air dry clay for them to roll out like cookie dough.  There were cookie cutters and beads to press into the clay like sprinkles.  However, air dry clay is not at all the same thing as model magic clay, which is what I had done that craft with before.  It still worked but was way messier.  The kids had a blast, and were so cute in their hats and the aprons that I sewed for everyone!  Serenity told me over and over that she loved it.  And Barrett, who came by visiting with Jen, said that Serenity is so lucky to have me for a mom.  I love that boy =)

Donovan really wants to go to school too =) Jen got Serenity this adorable outfit on zulily, perfect for Valentine's Day!

I made the aprons out of bandannas from Hobby Lobby. Only a dollar per bandanna, I may have to make something out of them every year!

Kindness Day Activities

3/10

We’ve done a great job continuing Kindness Day… Not doing so well documenting it. =)  But I want to at least make a few notes about what we’ve been up to!  Week 5: Make a Fleece Blanket.  Serenity and I went to Jo-ann’s together, and she chose fleece fabric to make one of those tied fleece blankets.  She tied at least a third of the knots, and considering there are about four hundred knots in one of those blankets, I think she did a great job!  We plan to send it to project linus, but since I haven’t heard back from the contact person in this area we may donate it somewhere else.

She picked this monkey fabric for the donation blanket. So cute!

We also made one for her. She picked this adorable Japanese girl print, over all the licensed character prints. I was so proud! It really is beautiful =)

Week 6: Mail a Hug.  I think writing letters is such a great thing to do, but I so rarely actually do it.  This was a fun craft project where we drew around Serenity on butcher paper, and then she colored herself in.  She wrote hugs on it really big and we mailed it to Vanaema and FarFar.

Week 7: Librarian Gift.  I asked Serenity who she thought we should do something nice for.  She decided to take something to the Librarians at the library we usually visit together.  I thought this was a great idea, especially since I request books from there nearly every week.  (it’s much easier than trying to find great books with two kids in tow, although I let them choose books too)  Anyway, she picked out an apple danish for them and made the a bookmark all by herself on the computer, because of course librarians need bookmarks.  After she gave it to the librarian (herself!  I was so proud at the way she spoke up to tell them what she was doing!)  I heard the librarian at the desk tell the others, “that nice family brought us a treat!”  Made me smile =)  And it made them smile too!  Perfect kindness day!

Week 8: Donuts for the Teachers.  I let Serenity decide what we should take to her school, and as donuts are her favorite treat she thought they would like it too =)   We took one box back for her teachers and left a couple more dozen in the office for the others.

Week 9: Compliment Day.  We actually did this a couple of days early, partially because we had a really busy Friday planned with Family Game Night, and partly because Serenity sees more different people on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The idea was for her to give compliments to others.  Hopefully encouraging her to speak where people can hear her, and to think about what she likes about other people.  When she got out of the car the first day I heard her tell Ms. Parent all about it.  It was very funny, and I’m not sure if she quite understood =)  But she told Eric that “You do a very good job taking care of Baby Donovan.”  So she got in a little practice at least.

Week 10: Gift Day:  I gave Serenity five dollars (and fifty cents for tax) to spend at the dollar store.  She told me right away that she wanted to get Dora stickers for Samantha, which was so thoughtful!  She also chose a balloon for Donovan, and Diego stickers for him.  She got princess stickers for Braley, and two things for Samantha, which we will deliver next week.  I was pleasantly surprised that she mostly chose things for others, and didn’t ask for a lot of things for herself.  I did buy her a balloon when she wasn’t looking, mostly because I didn’t want to have problems with balloon sharing all day.  It was great fun!

Donovan is 21 Months Old!

Actually, this was several days ago… and I haven’t posted anything for Serenity for February either =)  So maybe there’ll be a couple of posts up tonight!

Enjoying his new book from the book fair. He likes to say “Self!” by which he means, I can do this myself Mama, thanks.

He did a puzzle! Mostly because Sis was doing one too.

Checking out his Valentine’s Present. I printed up a book of my favorite pictures from the previous year for both kids.

He still loves everything associated with balls, and Daddy is very encouraging =)

2/12

Donovan wants to make sure his sister gets some of whatever he gets, whether or not she wants it.  If he wants cheerios, he asks for two bowls so sis can have one.  He wants to take it to her too.  Serenity usually loves it, but occasionally tries to explain that she isn’t hungry.  That never works =)

3/7

Donovan is 21 months!  He’s such a big boy.  He’s still such a snuggly boy.  He often says “I wove you Mama.”  It sounds just like that and completely melts me.  So sweet.  He has very specific bedtime plans.  Mama reads books, preferably lying down with him in her bed.  Then Daddy puts him in bed and pats him until he falls asleep.  This usually leads to Daddy falling asleep holding Donovan’s hand, which is precisely his plan.  We’ve even moved Serenity’s second mattress into Donovan’s room, since Daddy falls asleep all the time with this sweet bedtime routine.

He really loves Serenity.  It’s so cute to hear him talk about her, or ask about her when she’s at school.  We were at Abbey’s birthday, and Serenity was upset about something.  He went over to her and said “Why cryin Sis?  Huuuuuuug. =)”  And he followed this up with a very long hug until Serenity was giggling instead of crying.

He knows all the upper case letters, and most of their sounds now! We’ve started to play Super Why games at pbskids.org. He also sings the alphabet song.  He doesn’t really say all the letters, but he says a lot of them!  He really loves music, and adores music class.  It’s so fun to watch him participate, doing all the motions!  He really gets into drumming too.  I think he might want real music lessons when he’s bigger.
