Back to School!!!

IMG_1477

Serenity has been back in school for a month now.  We’re getting back in the swing of things.  =)  Her new class has some different rules, which she’s getting used to.  If you break the rules, your name goes on the board, and you may have to sit out at recess.  She really doesn’t like that, so it seems to be a good consequence.  She tells me so much more about her school days, I just love it!  Even when she gets in trouble, she tells me all about it.  One day she told me she got too interested in the model of the body in science and got her name on the board because she grabbed it, and Mrs. Foster confirmed that’s just about what happened. =)

She’s getting a lot of practice in handwriting, which is wonderful!  Every Friday we have a homework paper.  There’s a letter of the week, and she comes up with several words.  I say we have homework because I have to write the words in yellow marker for her to trace.  And every time I have to get out the D’Nealian chart to make sure I write them correctly.  My handwriting is so bad, but maybe I’ll improve!  So far she loves her homework page and does a fairly good job.  Her letters are still shaky, so all the practice will build up those muscles quickly!

She loves Kumon, which is the math system they use.  So far it’s mostly more tracing and line drawing, to get them to the point that they can write numbers and such.  But she had a few Kumon workbooks thanks to Aunt Kelly and so she feels she’s on Team Kumon and likes it. =)

One of the fun new things they’ve added this year is geography.  They study a state to go along with the letter each week, and Serenity comes home teaching us all about the state flowers, birds, capitals, and other interesting facts.  Exciting!

She loves seeing her friends at school, and seems to love everybody.  She tells me about soccer with Rachel, playing pretend with Lorelai and Harper, and holding hands with Sophia.  We have dance class with Wren and Harper, and they always stick together in the class and greet each other with shrieks of joy.  =)  SO cute.

Just before we started back to school, Serenity told me, “I just want to stay home with you every day.”  Broke my heart because I miss her when she’s at school, but even on the first day, once she was at school, she ran into her class (straight into Lorelai’s arms) and never looked back.  She’s amazing, so confident, friendly and sweet.  She even says good morning without being reminded to people as she passes them.  One day, she even asked Ms. Parent how her day went!  Hurray!  I’m so glad that she loves school, and that she has such a great place to learn.

Oh, I don’t think I posted the back to school party pics!  This year’s theme was Back to School Blast!  I made a big rocket out of cardboard, and we made jetpacks out of 2 liter bottles.  (Finally, I think I’ve had this project pinned for a year and a half!)  We also made straw rockets, which I found really entertaining.  =)  I made moon sand, so there was more sandbox fun.  I think the kids favorite thing was the stomp rocket launcher.  We managed to keep enough rockets to make it through the party, although the kids lost them shortly afterwards so I had to get a refill.  =)  It is always so much fun to get to see Serenity with her school friends, and I LOVE visiting with other parents!  The kids eventually went upstairs and started playing pretend cats, so after the party Serenity started planning her Tiger Playdate.  She even made invitations, so I guess I should get busy with that. =)

Donovan in August

Donovan loves Baby Rose =) He actually gives her bottles, and pats her gently saying "Sweet Baby." After watching him and Serenity argue over who gets to hold Audrey, Fred and Sarah's baby, I think Baby Starfish is going to get a lot of love =)

Donovan usually joins in with her crafting fun, scribbling on papers and bringing them to me saying, “I make a rainbow!  I make a airplane!  I make a slide!”  He loves stickers and is getting the fine motor skills to even pull them off the paper himself sometimes.

9/10

Donovan has a new favorite phrase: “perfect!”  He says it all the time when things line up just like he wants. =)  He’s also gotten really good at saying “please.”  Somehow it’s cuter and more effective when it sounds like “pease”  Or better yet, “pitty pease?”

This last month he’s spent a lot of time playing little computer.  He can zoom around it all on his own, and loves it!  So we have to work a lot on taking turns with Serenity. =)  His favorite games are Sid the Science Kid, where he fills in charts by sorting things by color and shape, Duck Duck Moose’s More Trucks, and Super Why.  We also do puzzles every day, and after a try or two can usually do up to 24 pieces mostly by himself.  He wants someone to be doing it with him, but I usually just connect large chunks of the puzzle that he’s put together.

He’s really a very easygoing guy most of the time.  The perfect example of this was last week, when I took him to meetings at school two days in a row.  He sat quietly, playing on the phone or just smiling at people, except when he said “shhhh” to Aunt Jen.  =)  And then he went with me to Serenity’s dance class and just played puzzle and toys while he waited on her.  Such a good boy.  Of course, he has his moments, like yesterday when he decided 4:30 was a good time to get up and play, but he’s so sweet and so much fun.

He adores the bubble blower we got for Easter.  In fact, we just used up the motor in our first two and bought some more on clearance.  They sometimes try to pop the bubbles with the baseball bat, or just chase them around the yard.  He loves playing baseball both indoors and outdoors, and prefers the ball to be pitched instead of just sitting on the baseball tee.  He adores swimming now.  I think it’s more fun with Daddy, who will throw him in the air as a reward if he floats on his back or goes under.  He’s at the stage where he’s just confident enough to be really dangerous.  Happy and excited to jump in the water, put his face in the water, etcetera.  So you have to watch him the whole time.  But I’m so glad he likes it now!  Floating on his back is still his least favorite part, but he will do it sometimes.

When we read books at bedtime, he wants to do it himself.  So he’ll pull down two books, one for me and one for him, which we each read side by side.  After a while he’ll usually let me read his book out loud to him.

He is obsessed with horses.  I’m starting to get hopes of a horse riding birthday party =)  He gallops around the house saying neigh, always chooses horses as the animal for Old MacDonald, and gets excited by our My Little Ponies.  =)  So much fun!  It’s either that or super heroes.  He knows the Green Lantern motto and enthusiastically says it with Daddy all the time.  If you ask him to do something, he’ll say, “Super Boy!” and put his arms behind him like a cape and fly off to help out.  He’s a good helper.  And he loves it when I tell him this =)

He loves wearing his Rescue Pack when we take sister to school.
