Thanksgiving Festivities 2013

We have so much to be thankful for this year, and we definitely celebrated a lot =)

First, we had our second shoebox packing party since the kids were old enough to help.  Our friends the Richards and the Hoppers from OKC came down, and the kids had a blast sorting the goodies and filling up the boxes.  And then we relied on Scott’s engineering skills to make it all fit =)  I made an ice cream sandwich bar with Snickerdoodles, Oatmeal Cookies, Mocha Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Chip cookies.  With five kinds of ice cream and tons of toppings, this was tons of fun

I think the adults enjoyed the ice cream sandwiches more than the kids =) Kids preferred them separately. And Eric too =)

Then we had the Thanksgiving Banquet at Serenity’s school.  I made chocolate sheet cake.  I wanted something I’d made a lot since I came uncomfortably close to putting curry powder in my cookies instead of cocoa powder.  =)  The banquet was great fun, as always.  We got to sit down and chat with our Uschool friends, and this year the kids put on a little show for us with poems and a song!  And someone brought samosas, which made my day =)  Serenity was very proud of the class turkey.  Hers is the one with the most purple =)  And she made her dots into stripes.

I really love cooking Thanksgiving food, even though there’s no law that says I can only make a turkey once a year, that’s about as often as I manage it.  I cooked Sunday for my family, Dad, Mom and Brandon.  I made my normal menu, turkey cooked with orange slices and apricot jam, orange rolls, a savory sweet potato dish and green bean casserole.  We also had a chocolate pie and oatmeal apple crisp.  (with some excellent leftover ice cream, salted caramel!)  Donovan had to be coerced into eating one bite of the very large “chicken” before he could have more orange rolls.  But I didn’t really worry with policing food at Thanksgiving meals.  I do that every other meal =)

Our last Thanksgiving was a wonderful meal with Mike and Kelly’s family.  I’m so glad they invited us, it just seems wrong to just have one family on Thanksgiving!  Plus, they are spectacular cooks!  Garlic was highly featured, which is my favorite =)  Garlic green beans and mashed potatoes.  Yummy turkey Mike grilled, with really good turkey gravy.  I don’t usually eat turkey gravy but this was incredible.  The kids had a wonderful day playing with their cousins. =)  They tried out all their toys, and then they went outside and discovered the trampoline!  They bounced until they were completely
exhausted and then food was ready =)  Serenity unfortunately started running a fever around the time dinner was on the table, so she just snuggled into Daddy’s lap and ate a roll.  Donovan fell asleep in the car on the way home and slept till his normal bedtime.  Going to be an interesting night =)  Eric got to play one game of Dominion, which Carson and Raegan are getting really good at!  I got to take a nap with the feverish girl, which actually felt really good =)  I made a couple of different gluten free pies and some snickerdoodle fudge, which worked out ok.  I have a couple of recipe tweaks in mind for next time. =)

Less than Three Weeks Left!!

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

I decided to squeeze in one last picture for this pregnancy, before I can’t squeeze into my dress. =)  Knowing this is my last pregnancy, I’ve tried to savor it.  I really love it so much, but I’m getting so excited to actually see this baby girl!

There are only a few weeks left in my third and probably last pregnancy.  I am reveling in it. =)  I’m to the point where I take a bath nearly every night to soak out any little twinges.  I absolutely adore watching her roll around and around.  I talk to her and assure her that I can’t wait to see her.  I’ve also reached the glorious nesting phase.  I’m not in the mood to read, instead I check items off my list and then make new lists to check off.  I’ve organized my advent activities into manila envelopes by the day, with all the little things I’ve bought for the activities sorted into a tub and ready to go.  I’ve ordered all the presents for Christmas, and they’re now in the closet in Amazon boxes ready to wrap.  Today I even decided what we’d all wear for our first family picture session with Heather in January.  Mind you, I have no idea what size I’ll be or what size Starfish might be, but I ordered things anyway.  And after that I sorted through every plastic tub in the attic, sorting out clothes to donate, clothes to send to our friends boy children, clothes to keep for nostalgic and crafty reasons, and then sorted all the girl clothing by size and actually labeled the tubs so I don’t have to dig again to find things in there.  The attic is basically empty now, and everything is sorted ready for Eric to fill it back up.  =)  Ahh, joy, I love organizing.  Next up is going through all the toys and clearing a few out.  If you looked at the playroom upstairs it is a complete disaster, but I can see it coming together again now =)

We had a wonderful shower thrown for us by Jennie.  She taught us how to silk screen!  A craft I’d never done before!  It was so much fun!  We made some cute onesies for the baby and t-shirts for the big kids.  Abbey, Jessie and Summer came down from OKC, and Phillip and Jessica brought Sophia by as well.  It was perfect, and so nice to get to celebrate the baby!

I love that these girls have so much fun together =) Maggie chose to come to the party with Abbey cause she wanted to see Serenity. =)

I am extremely large, which is to be expected at more than 8 months.  My older children seem to think I’ve grown to this size just to provide them with a great big tent to hide in, but I have to tell them to quit pulling my dresses up in public.  =)

Serenity talks to the baby and kisses her all the time, and Donovan has even mentioned the baby in my tummy a few times.  We are all so excited for our baby girl!

I set this up to take pictures automatically, since he's using my sharp scissors =) He helped cut ribbons for baby sister's Taggie blanket. He's asked to do this a lot since, he loves using his "sharp!"

Candyland! He's getting pretty good at following along with games! And he pulls them out one after another from the game cabinet =) Good thing he's also pretty good when I say he has to clean one up before the next comes out.

Donovan made up the cutest song. 90% of the lyrics were, "I like sister, I like sister." Every now and again he'd throw in an "I like Mama," "I like Daddy," Or "I like Donovan" but mostly it was all about sister =)

Donovan is very visually perceptive.  He actually notices things around him.  Like if you ask him where a specific toy is, he can often go right to it.  I think he’s better at this than Eric!  And it still surprises me.  Like today, I pulled out Zingo.  I was prepared to nudge him into noticing what he needed on his card, and to paying attention to which tile came out of the Zingo box.  But he didn’t need help!  He even beat me to one of the tiles that we both needed.  We’re not focused on the winning thing, as we play until both cards are full, but I was ready to have to wait for him to see what tile came up, and then check his card, and for that process to take a while.  But it didn’t!  He remembered what he needed a lot of the time, and picked it up right away!  The only problem we ran into was when the soccer ball came up, and he realized it wasn’t on his card.  So he dumped his nearly full card and started with a different one, which he dumped when it didn’t have a spot for a train tile.  So we had to make a new rule that we don’t switch cards until it’s full and we get to say Zingo =)  But it was fun!

Donovan and Serenity have a game when they’re reading together.  On every page they pick a person to be.  Like in “Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs,”  on one page Serenity will be the pink dinosaur, and Donovan will be the blue.  Daddy is usually green, and I’m yellow.  They did this in a toy catalogue that Serenity read to Donovan for several nights in a row too.  Donovan was the polar bear, Serenity was the lion, etcetera.  Well, last night we read Serenity’s human body book.  We got to the section of the heart, and Serenity said, I think I’m the left atrium.  What do you want to be Mama?  So I chose the left ventricle, since it was the same side as Serenity.  Then she asked Donovan and he chose the right ventricle =)  So Daddy ended up as the right atrium.
