It’s hard to believe there is anything I haven’t already written about in October, but I found one or two things to add =)

Serenity's first field trip!

Serenity’s first field trip!

11/8

Serenity has started curtseying when she asks for things. “Mama, may you please get me some milk?” Then curtsey. It’s really fancied up the atmosphere around here =)

Serenity is extremely excited about the play at school. She was telling us all about it, and having us stand in for all the characters. Mrs. Carter told me that she was doing really well as the narrator. She pays attention and knows just when it’s her turn to talk again, and she hasn’t really needed any coaching. She’ll even mouth other people’s lines and poke Stewart when it’s his turn.

Serenity had her first field trip! Maia and I went along, of course. Visiting the pumpkin patch at Livesay Orchards in Porter with a class full of kindergarteners was fantastic. They each got to choose a pumpkin, have a hay ride, and play in the pumpkin play zone. Also, they learned some fun facts about pumpkins, including the fact that the stem is not a handle. Serenity was very stern with me when she caught me carrying her pumpkin by the stem. She was buddies with Elizabeth. I didn’t see it, but evidently when it was time to choose buddies she was motioning to Elizabeth very emphatically.

Serenity also had her first sleepover with a friend! She was invited to stay at Elizabeth’s house. It being her first sleepover I was a little unsure initially. Well, I knew she would absolutely love it and that she’d have no problems being away from home. But I’m happy to report that I did just fine 😉 She loves Elizabeth and evidently tried to mind her manners.

John and Ann’s Visit!

Saturday, November 8th, 2014

Ann and John visited us!!! We had an awesome visit and the kids were over the moon excited.  They arrived on a Wednesday, and I took one child out of school each day so they could have some special one-on-one time with Vanaema and Far Far. On Serenity’s day they played Settlers of Catan and some UNO. They also played Old Maid, Go Fish, and they attempted to teach Serenity Pairs and Tails. I so love that the kids are starting to play card games! They went to the park for awhile and Serenity showed off her monkey bar skills.

Donovan got to stay home Friday. He played UNO, lost puppies, and he and John built trains for awhile. Ann played quite a bit of baseball with him too. Later they went to Turkey Mountain for a little hiking.

I’ve already written a post about Halloween, which was especially fun since Ann and John were in the spirit with their super hero costumes =) Click here if you haven’t seen that yet.

Saturday the kids got to show off what they are learning in their lessons. Donovan showed off his soccer skills to John and Ann watched Serenity ice skate. In the evening we went to my sister’s for her awesome fall fun party. Bonfires, hay rides, bounce house, lots of fun!

On Sunday we went to the Discovery Lab! It was John’s first time and I think he loved it =) There were lots of new exhibits we hadn’t seen before, including barrels that you can climb up and over, ropes to swing on, and other moving exhibits. And there were dinosaurs! Red Dirt Dinos that were actually found in this area. Maia was mesmerized by one dino in particular and she stood up for thirty seconds at a time just staring. She has become incredibly mobile in such a short time it seems. We had just told Ann she wasn’t really crawling and now she’s FAST! And she can stand up without pulling on anything and stand for ages.
After the lab Ann and John treated us to a nice lunch at Chili’s. Donovan is still talking about what he’ll eat the next time he goes to John’s “favorite restaurant.”

Every night we got to play eight hands of bridge, which now makes me feel bereft that I don’t get to play anymore. The kids have mastered UNO now, they’re ready for bridge, right?

John and Eric defeated the Hobbit storyline… with a little help from me once.

John had books of riddles ready for his role as the Riddler. They were funny! =)

Halloween!!!

Tuesday, November 4th, 2014

The best part about Halloween this year was definitely having John and Ann here!  Donovan had decided he wanted to be Batman way back when we visited California the last time, in fact I bought the black fabric for his cape at my favorite California fabric shop.  So John decided that he would be the Riddler.  We had a green bowler hat that I had bought last St. Patrick’s Day (I love the Target dollar spot =)  and he bought a green shirt that we covered with sticker question marks.  The best part of his costume though was his book of riddles.  He especially loved to ask “What’s black and white and read all over?”  Surprising how many kids have no idea what a newspaper is.  =)  Ann dressed up as Batgirl.  Serenity designed her own costume.  She was BatCat.  Batman’s pet cat =)  She had a black furry tail, claws that she cut out herself sewn to gloves, and her cat ears.  Both kids loved “catching” the Riddler, holding John’s hand as they trick or treated.  And they also loved holding hands with their teammate BatGirl.  Now Eric was Green Arrow.  I made him a quiver, a Robin Hood style hat, and green leather armbands.  We added a sleeveless green hoodie, and a bow and arrow set from Target.  It was such a cool costume, and he wore his hat all weekend =)  However, he only visited one house with us since he didn’t want to strain his poor ankle.  I planned to dress up as Wonder Woman, but once again I didn’t get as far as making my own costume.  Next year I’m making mine first since I never fail to finish the children’s costumes =)

The kids came home and immediately went through their stash, trading things they don’t eat for dumdums from our candy bowl, and giving all the peanut butter cups to John and the Almond Joys to Ann.  Eric claimed kitkats and crunch bars. =)

We had a lot of Halloween fun at our school’s annual Halloween Carnival as well.  The carnival had a Medieval theme to match the book fair.  Donovan dressed up in his knight costume and carried his sword from Cinderella’s table and his shield from Legoland.  Serenity dressed in her white Cinderella dress, because she made it her mission to wear every princess costume in her closet after our Disney trip.  She wore Elsa, Rapunzel and Belle in Disney, and she wore Snow White to school for princess day, so she had to do Cinderella =)

The carnival was a blast!  I made a new game, Storm the Castle.  I made three castle turrets out of huge cardboard tubes and painted them to look like castles.  The kids threw balls into each successive tower, just the grand prize game from Bozo the Clown.  It was fun!  This year, instead of having candy at every booth, we gave out stamps and the kids got to spend them at a booth like at Chuck E Cheese.  I think it was pretty popular, although we gave out a lot less candy since more people went for the prizes instead.

We got a family picture since we had a fire drill =)

Drawbridge, knights, and torches =) Turning the play structure into a castle was FUN! I love the dragons flaming the castle.
