DZ in February

Snow Zuma and Hovercraft!

Snow Zuma and Hovercraft!

We spent a lot of time snowed in this month. We always get most of our snow in February. DZ tends to enjoy the snow for longer than Serenity and I do, fortunately he and his Daddy had fun together =) They built a snow Zuma and his hovercraft! Adorable.

Donovan was so excited for his class Valentine party! It was a Puppy Love theme. =) I ordered little puppies with hearts on them from Oriental Trading, and made them doghouses out of gable boxes. The kids decorated these with stickers, and made collars with pipe cleaners and beads for their puppies. It was just like the pound puppies on my childhood. The kids loved decorating the doghouse and pretending to be puppies. It was a little crazy since I was across the hall running P-1’s party, and Eric and Maia were in DZ’s party. But they had a wonderful time!

Donovan is getting really good at Legos. Raegan passed down several kits, plus he built a Ninja Turtle Lair he got at Christmas, and our Winter Carousel set. I love it!!!

Serenity read The Secret Garden this month. I love her so much! It was so much fun to see her enjoying a book I love. Later she told me she was going to use Magic to fly. Just like Colin uses Magic in the book to learn to walk. She is going to visualize it and then work Magic. She’s not allowed to talk to her Uncle Michael about his early attempts at flight. =)

Today’s lesson from Cookie Selling: Serenity convinced someone to order and they said, let me go get my checkbook. She looks back at Eric completely baffled and said, “What’s a checkbook??” Something new =)

Best moment was when someone asked her if she knew the Girl Scout Law and she recited the whole thing and got several other orders from other people that heard her =)

Serenity just came downstairs at 10:30 and said, “It’s just too hard to sleep when BOOKS are tempting me to read them. She is so my daughter =)

Serenity in February… I can’t believe I forgot to journal the entire month! It was such a great month! Especially for Girl Scouts. Serenity had her very first cookie business =) I think it was a great experience for her, and a surprisingly good one for me. She went door to door in our neighborhood, and was unfazed by all the doors we knocked on where no one was home, and didn’t mind when people told her “no, thanks.” She sold more than a dozen boxes that first day, and I decided the 4 dozen boxes they sent home with us weren’t as intimidating as I first thought. We pulled out all the boxes ordered by family, and she insisted we go restock that very day, “after all, it is my cookie business!” She sold lots of boxes to Eric’s work, and spent a very busy two hours working a cookie booth outside of the grocery store. So she met her goal! I was very pleased, especially since she took most of the responsibility for the business, doing inventories, deciding what we needed to restock (usually thin mints!), and speaking to lots and lots of customers. She even got to make a booth in Papa’s yard one day, which was very exciting for her since she had asked me multiple times if she could have a lemonade stand in our yard. So I’m very glad we sold cookies, enough to earn her a cheetah =) (280 boxes) Her troop had a special cookie tasting event, which was attended by a real chef, Justin Thompson, who is using our Girl Scout cookies in his restaurants to help raise money for the charity the girls chose, the Child Abuse Network. So there were news cameras and the girls even got into the Tulsa Kids Magazine. Exciting stuff. I was just glad that the news cameras didn’t record Serenity tasting the Thin Mint, as it made her cry. She was not a fan. =)

The other exciting Girl Scout event this month was World Thinking Day. Jennifer, her troop leader, and Rachel set up an amazing day at the library. We broke into small groups and discussed other countries. We got to learn about researching in a library, using their computers to look stuff up, and reading in a book to find out about other countries. Serenity studied Haiti and Egypt. She learned that nearly 90 percent of the schools in Haiti were destroyed by earthquakes, and she learned about political unrest in Egypt. She thought we could help Haiti by making monuments for the people who died in the earthquake, so their story was never forgotten. She wanted to send Egypt water in a big tube. I loved how thoughtful all the girls were about the problems others face and how they could help! And then they drew their own peace symbols, which will be combined into a troop t-shirt. So fun!

At school this month was their Valentine’s party. I made a puppy party for both of the kids classes. I got to make doghouses with my cardboard stash, and I used my new polaroid camera that makes stickers in Serenity’s class. The kids had lots of fun!! =)
