Donovan in June:

Florida and Corwyn: Right after Donovan’s birthday party, we went to Florida to visit Gavin, Jennie and Corwyn.  We had SO much fun!!!  Five days may have been a little much for a sleepover at their age, but they played so well together!  I love them so much!

We were mostly there to see the Palfreymans, but we did go to the beach twice, and the kids discovered they LOVE boogie boards in the ocean.  So much fun!  We also went to the zoo on a very wet day, which was fine with me.  Less heat =)  We got to play Spades, an awesome DC deck building game, and had so much fun!

Build and Grow: Jennie told us about the Lowe’s Build and Grow series.  This summer they are doing Avengers!  I had taken Serenity to one of these a long time ago, and she couldn’t quite do the hammering on her own, so I was waiting until they were a little older to try.  I’m so glad we went with Corwyn!  The kids both loved it.  They built an amazing Captain America figure, and begged me to take them to make the other five in the set.  We went to make Ironman last weekend, and they loved it just as much. He lights up!  So fun.  Donovan could hammer in the nails just fine, and Serenity basically built it herself with only minimal assistance.

Avengers: Black Widow.  Donovan is really into the Avengers suddenly.  Corwyn had a Five Minute Avengers storybook, and we read the whole thing during our visit.  That, combined with the Build and Grow, seems to have brought the Avengers to the foreground of superhero fun.  His favorite is Black Widow.  He likes her all black outfit.  Right now he says that’s what he wants to be for Halloween.  If he sticks with it it will be fun to make his hair red!  =)

Snow Cones: We’ve gone on several snow cone walks to Tulsa Hills.  Donovan usually gets Tigers Blood, or more recently Spiderman, which is a mix of Strawberry and Blue Hawaiian.

Summer Reading: We signed up for the summer reading program, and Donovan was seriously dedicated to getting his reading done!  He calculated how many books he needed to get at each library visit, and begged me to listen to him read until he went through all his books!  He went through ten books the first day!  It was amazing!  We got several books that he could read entirely on his own, books like Stop Pop and Crab Cab.  They had short phrases and sentences he could sound out.  He is getting quite a few sight words regularly now too.  When he reads bigger books I usually take turns with him, and let him read a few sentences or phrases and I help with more complicated words so he can still get through it fairy fluently.  It’s FUN!  I also bought him a set of BOB books from the last book fair, and he’s read every single one of those, aloud and to himself at bedtime.

Gymnastics: Donovan begged to do gymnastics this summer, because he wants to work on his Spiderman moves.  We signed him up at a new studio near the house.  It’s still under construction, but he seemed to like the class!

Camp Incredible X2: DZ was signed up for two camps this summer: Explore, Create, Innovate, with the fabulous Mrs. McBride, and Mad Scientist with McBride, Mrs. Fox, and Mrs. Carter.  He loves it!  He didn’t want to miss a minute of camp, not even for gymnastics, which he also loves.  It was a very hard choice =)

Papa built Donovan a BED!  It’s perfect!  It fits our twin XL mattresses, is lofted enough that he can play under it but I can still make the bed and reach him, and has a slide!  Eventually we are going to make a hammock for underneath.  Right now, DZ calls the underneath part the Batcave, and the top the Batmobile.  Love it!  And I love that Papa let him help build.  He even used the drill!

Donovan’s Birthday Party

Donovan’s 5th Birthday: Superhero Splash!!!

After much discussion, we settled on a Superhero Splash theme.  I encouraged this largely because I’d already made regular superhero capes a couple of times, and then I saw this towel cape and thought what fun it would be to make them for party favors!!!  And it was just the inspiration I needed, Donovan had a blast!!!!!

We had a lot of key elements already. Dad bought them a little blow up waterslide several years ago for Donovan’s first birthday, and it still works, and the kids still love it. We called it “Spiderman’s Wall Climb.” We also used the KidWash we built for Serenity’s mermaid party.  We turned it into the Batmobile Wash.  The kids help me hang bats, lots of blue, yellow and black pool noodles, and some colorful strips cut from plastic tablecloths to perfect the look =)

Some new things we got were a couple of slip N slides.  Ok, one new one, one accidentally stolen(and replaced) from Brian Vo at Fantastico.  We called that Flash’s Runway.  It was SO much fun!  The kids slid all over the place.  Barrett (Robin) and Carson (or Super Iron Carson Man, as he prefers to be called now) had some serious races.  So much fun!!!

IMG_8385 IMG_8386 IMG_8654 IMG_8705

I also got a water blob.  I’ve made these myself before, and they are a lot of fun to lounge on when it’s hot outside, and then I saw one on HearthSong that can be reused.  Brilliant!  I put a Justice League party backdrop underneath it, and it looked pretty cool =)  They liked hanging out with Aquaman =)

Eric set up a superhero training obstacle course in the yard.  We printed pictures some of Donovan’s favorite villains and taped them to trees, fences, and the swing set.  The kids ran around the yard throwing ninja stars and batarangs (made from a star shaped pool noodle and craft foam).  They had to jump up on the stumps, run through trees, and get all the bad guys.  After they practiced for awhile, I brought out the foam water squirters.  I told them the Riddler had stolen all the fruit snacks for the party, and they needed to retrieve them!  So they all grabbed the water cannons, and Eric ran around the corner cackling wildly.  Every time he got squirted he would drop a few fruit snacks, like a live action piñata!  SO fun!  Eric was drenched =)

The kids and I painted a bunch of boxes to look like skyscrapers =)  It made for a cute picture!  It was raining when I set up the party though, so I brought them quickly under the patio.  We had a bit of a superhero swamp.  Most of the adults huddled on the patio watching the action, because you had to slog through ankle deep mud to get to the rest of the yard.  Fortunately, the sun came out, so except for that one little mud river, the yard worked great =)

Donovan chose donuts for his birthday treat, of course =)

We remembered fishing!  I don’t think the kids will let us forget again.  I wrapped the pole in washi tape so it could be Spiderman’s web grab.  That was Donovan’s idea =)

Happy Birthday to my sweet, snuggly superhero!  You are so much fun.  You have just the sweetest, silliest giggle, and such a kind heart.  I love you so much and I am so lucky to be your Mama!!!IMG_8381

Donovan in May

Wednesday, June 29th, 2016

I haven’t written DZ’s birthday update yet, but since I don’t want to fall further behind, here’s the post I wrote for May.  I have a shiny new computer so sorting pictures is much more fun!

5/22

Donovan LOVES having Vana ema and Far Far here.  He has gotten to play board games every single day, including a few new ones that they bought for his birthday.  He got the train game (the one with train robbers the Richards introduced him to.)  And he’s played Legendary, an awesome Marvel game Eric just got.  He also played Uno with Vana ema, and some Mexican Train the night Grandma came over.

Donovan did a great job hiking through the woods.  He climbed every rock Serenity did, and once I told him he was stressing me out (this was after he was dangling on a rock by his hands.  It was a 45 degree angle so it was probably ok, but if he slid down it he would have gone a LONG way down.)  After this, whenever he climbed a rock he asked “Is this distressing you Mama”  He is such a cutie.

He adored the medieval fair.  He went dressed as a night, and we did not lose him this time.  I was really glad Ann and John were there.  He especially loved the jousting, and watching the sword fights during the live chess match.  He also got a black stone (which he was told was the black plague, but he liked it too much to try and get cured.)  He just thought it was awesome.  And he got a bell to make the fairies feel happy.  We watched a lot of the shows this year, so it was very different from last years visit.  So much fun!  John had made an itinerary for us so we got to see several exciting exhibitions.  The birds of prey were beautiful and the trainer had them fly through peoples arms.  Truly impressive.  And we saw jousting, and a live chess match.  The kids got snow cones, ice cream, and kettle corn.  They also shared a turkey leg and corn on the cob, and I got an Indian Taco, and John shared his chicken fried steak sandwich, so we got to sample a lot of delicious fair food!

Donovan’s end of the year performance was done in USOLA, the new outdoor space at USchool.  They were adorable, of course.  They sang several animal-related songs.  At one point they were given little bandanas to wave around.  When they were done, they were supposed to stick it in their pockets… well Donovan put the entire bandana all the way down his pants.  Ashley and I were cracking up.  He did a great job singing and doing the motions! =)
