Ok, so most of what I need to write about is stuff that happened just before her 2nd birthday, just after I wrote the blog post =) She is SO into spelling! Just in the last week you can just see things clicking in her head. She will spell words we ask her out loud now, like out of the blue she was saying “I am running so fast, F-A-S-T!” And she can instantly identify the starting letter of any word we give her. She was spelling for Aunt Jennifer and Jen, being silly, asked her to spell Zandbergen, and Serenity immediately said “Z!” We all laughed and were amazed too! She likes to run up to her secret room to spell words lately too, especially cute which is one she sees on her new Tad Movie. (which we’ve watched about fifty times in the last two weeks. Hey, she’s learned about Silent E!) She readily identifies maybe 50 words, and sometimes tries to sound out new ones. We were reading one of her Biscuit books and she pointed to “tug” and said “tuh-uh-guh, tug!”

She loves spelling with her new felt letters in her Book Club =) She's doing all the -at words she can think of =)

She can sometimes spell Serenity... sometimes she skips a few letters in the middle =)

She recognized a pattern with the lacing beads for the first time!

She’s starting to try to trace letters with me. On Princess Presto’s Wands Up Writing Game and just during craft time with Mama.

One day when she wanted to do crafts I wrote letters for her to trace =) She loved the letters and ran around the house waving them in the air!

Serenity is really starting to read! It’s just amazing. Jen got her these flashcards that you slide over to reveal one letter at a time, and she loves sounding out words! I was only going to do a few of these, not wanting it to be like work for her, but anytime I started to put them away she said “MORE CARDS!!” There were quite a few that she just recognized, but it’s great that it’s getting her in the habit of sounding out new words. And we spent a long time this morning playing with the felt letters from her Book Club tent and she kept asking me “Mama build words, Mama build words!” It was such fun! I made hop, and changed it to stop, and then she decided she wanted it to be hop again. Then she tried to hop which didn’t work so well in her card table tent but she enjoyed it

So much has happened in the past month, that I’ve fallen behind in journaling again. Fortunately most of it got noted down in our Gathering posts so at least there’s a bit of a record of Serenity’s recent activities. She is reading and recognizing even more words, a few hundred maybe. She’s pretty good at figuring out three and four letter words even if it isn’t one she knows. And most books we read now I point out a few words on each page and ask her what they are, and she either tells me or we sound them out together. She still loves letters and spelling! One day in Tahoe I was trying to get a group together to go to the beach, but I spelled out the word BEACH as we weren’t exactly ready to go yet, and Serenity immediately said, “I go to beach!!!” And started off, while everyone laughed at me =)

Her newest addiction is definitely Dora the Explorer. Jennifer was cleaning out her dvds and she had a Dora dvd her boys don’t watch anymore. Well Serenity LOVES it. She asks to watch Dora everyday right now! She’s actually learning a little Spanish from this, which is fun! Her favorite Spanish word is definitely “arriba!” She giggles when I say it with my best Spanish accent =) She has learned some of the numbers. Today in music class she counted sticks up to ocho. And a few colors, especially azul and verde. It’s cute to hear her try to mimic my accent, with some funny results, like saying cuat-toe-doe instead of cuatro. She pretends that she’s reading maps, and uses her backpack more. And she’ll talk about Dora’s adventures when she’s playing by herself. I think I’d like to try and get Dora in all Spanish so she gets exposed to even more words =)

She actually had her first time out ever while we were on our Tahoe trip. She has started saying “I can push!” and pushing people. She kept pushing Henry so we had to start doing time out. Even if she didn’t really push hard, it’s still not a good thing! By the end of the trip she mostly just said push instead of actually pushing, so time out may have helped a little bit. I hope we can help her figure out other ways to express her frustrations!

I think it’s safe to say now that she is sleeping through the night now =) She doesn’t even transfer to our bed in the middle of the night anymore! Sometimes she’ll get up at 6:30 and cuddle with us, maybe sleep a little bit longer with us, but generally it’s not until an acceptable waking time. If the sun is up, she probably will be too =) I will admit that I miss sleeping with her when she doesn’t come to bed with us, but she is still very snuggly and cuddly during the day so I’m mostly happy that she’s comfortable in her own bed.

Still love snuggling in the blue chair =)

Before the Gathering we had a nice visit with Vanaemma, Farfar and Tina. We even went on a little hike at Villa Montalvo, and went “swimming” a couple of times at Kona Kai. “Swimming” is in quotes because Serenity really didn’t care for the big pool. When we took her to the kiddie pool she said, “I can do it myself!” And then she started walking around the pool, kicking up her legs and saying “I’m swimming!!!” It was very cute. We may need lessons =)

We spent an entire hour today doing puzzles! It was so much fun! I got this animal puzzle at the dollar spot in Target, and she wanted to do it eight times in a row! And then we moved on to the Pigeon puzzle that Veronica and Juan got her, and then the big dancing puzzle they got her. Thank goodness for Juan and Veronica, evidently she needs a couple more puzzles =)

Serenity's First Scavenger Hunt! I wrote the words Stick, Leaf, Flower, and Rock on a paper, and Serenity read each word by herself and then went to find each object!

Serenity got some new play-doh... and a penguin cutter to go with it. Her daddy started a game where he made a purple penguin, a blue bed, a purple pillow, and green covers. Serenity loves tucking the penguin in, and she wanted it made so often exactly this way the play-doh dried out!
